Gameplay: published November 19th, 2021 (3/5★)
To gather your allies, you must reach the end of their respective dungeons and best them in combat. It’s important to stock-up on items and “gems” during each run — each dungeon has at least thirty floors, and a boss divides every ten. Some floors offer a fork in the road; one will take you to the next floor; and the other offers randomized perks in exchange for a difficulty bump. It’s tempting to always choose the latter, but enemies will grow unmanageably powerful if you allow greed to get the best of you! I found that it was better to avoid the temptation and take advantage of the gods’ shrines; by coughing up your hard-earned “souls” and hit points, you may pray to the gods after combat for a chance to gain something beneficial. The gods are greedy bastards, but their gifts are the least penalizing. When you die, you lose everything. Gems are a permanent way to increase your core stats. The best way to find gems is to destroy everything; if it can break, it can drop gems! You may purchase a limited number of gems at home, but there is no limit to gems found in the world. No matter how much you suck, with enough persistence nothing will be able to stand in your way!
Sexual Content: published November 19th, 2021 (2/5★)
I know Sand Traveler plans on adding more content, but the game offers four sex-scenes. Some sex-scenes are tied to the “story”, but most of them are purchased at home by offering “gifts” to unlocked companions. Gifts are used to garner affection and unlock new sexual-scenes! Each of them offers a single, static CG with variations for undress and climax. The artwork is beautiful — it’s top-notch content, but the sex-scenes themselves leave a lot to be desired. There is no user-interactivity whatsoever. Each scene automatically progresses, flashing every few seconds as the next CG is displayed. If you plan on fapping to Last Devil, you’ll have to fap before the slideshow-style cutscenes elapse. Some scenes offer dialogue, but the auto-progression and bright flashes are a nuisance. Last Devil offers a combination of gay and straight porn — but mostly gay porn. As a fan of boy-princesses, I strongly approve of what I saw.
Story: published November 19th, 2021 (2/5★)
As king of the demons, Lord Kuro is their last chance to turn the tide of battle; his kingdom has been ravaged by all of the other races, and his “elite divisions” are no more. It’s up to him to collect new allies to keep demons on the map!
Sound: published November 19th, 2021 (3/5★)
The music and sound effects are alright, but I ended up muting the game after a few hours. Considering there are only a few levels, the same few tracks are played on repeat — I decided I’d rather listen to YouTube videos.
Visuals: published November 19th, 2021 (3/5★)
The sprites are visually appealing, but they felt stock and generally uninspired. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are premade! Not a single one of them of them suggests Last Devil is an adult game — there aren’t any monster-girls or lewd background elements. The enemies and scenery are super-generic, and sprites are periodically over-scaled (creating disproportionately large pixels). When studios don’t make their own sprites, over-scaling is the only option to make characters and projectiles look “bigger”.
The user-interface looks great, but I think the visual accessibility leaves a something to be desired. The bottom of the screen displays your stats and cool downs, but it’s so small I never used it during combat. I think Sand Traveler could make the bottom bar a bit bigger without encroaching on the action. I really like how it displays the controls, a feature that’ll no doubt come in handy when as new abilities are added to the game. For anyone returning to Last Devil, the user-interface will help you jump into new updates!
Verdict: published November 19th, 2021 (2/5★)
I’m mad at this game. Had I known how incomplete the game was, I would have never purchased it. Last I played Last Devil, there was only one dungeon (two if you count the harder version). Whenever I completed the second level, I thought I encountered some sort of bug; it seemed like no matter who I talked to or what I killed, I could never unlock the second level. As it turns out, there is no “second level” (yet). Roguelikes are fun when they offer variety or interesting progression. Maybe thirty minutes after the tutorial, I saw nearly everything Last Devil had to offer — there aren’t that many spells or enemies to see between floors. Knowing how much content I would have to repeat made every death sting harder. I think when Last Devil is completed, it’ll be an alright game. The gameplay isn’t terrible, it just a little tedious (and blatantly incomplete). The sex-scenes are great, but they need to provide more player agency. Like salt in the wound, they flash annoyingly as they zip-by without you pressing any buttons. I don’t recommend anyone purchase this game until it is completed. Last Devil desperately needs more content before it’ll be worth asking price.
